Lynx Trusses recently won a large order to supply steel roof trusses to a national supermarket chain for commercial roofing. The steel trusses provided a reliable and cost-effective solution – and offer low-pitch long spans in excess of 25 metres.

For commercial applications the lightweight steel roof trusses can provide a cost-effective solution, offering low-pitch long spans in excess of 25 metres and providing reliable, economical, structural solutions for almost every roof or floor application in the non-domestic construction sector.

Steel trusses offer architects, engineers and contractors the flexibility and design advantages of wood trusses plus the proven material advantages of steel - combined strength and stiffness, fire resistance, insect resistance, recyclability, high recycled content, increased strength-to-weight ratio and increased uniformity of material strength from member to member. When used in commercial applications, cold-formed steel trusses augment traditional steel framing or blockwork construction to achieve fully non-combustible superstructures.

For the installer, the high strength-to-weight ratio of the these trusses makes them easier to handle and install, and because they are lightweight and stable during handling, one man can typically lift and carry a 10 metre truss by himself. Unlike some other steel trusses, the Lynx steel trusses are fabricated using TrusSteel™components which resist bending (or “butterflying”) when lifted on their sides.

Steel roof trusses with low-pitch clear spans in excess of 25 metres!

ARC™ trusses can clear span over 25 metres (depending upon configuration), overhangs or cantilevers are no problem and for tall roofs, the trusses can work in piggyback truss situations. For long spans, ARC™ steel trusses can be fabricated and shipped in sections and spliced at the job site. ARC™ trusses offer smoothly-curved (not segmented) top and/or bottom chords that make these trusses the perfect solution for framing curved roofs, arched or barrel-vaulted canopies, or any design element with an arc or radius curve.

Non-combustible TrusSteel™ trusses provide integral, recognized fire resistance that does not fade with time. Building codes often have requirements that building elements perform for a specific period of time when subjected to the elevated temperatures associated with a fire event, based upon the defined type of building/occupancy. One of these requirements is that the building element must withstand a fire event while supporting a specific load. Building assemblies containing TrusSteel™ trusses have been tested in the USA and these assemblies have been tested as having 1 hour, 1-1/2 hour and 2 hour fire resistive properties TrusSteel™ has earned the UL Classification Mark (USA) as to its fire-resistive properties.

The pre-engineered CFS (Cold-Formed Steel) trusses were developed in the USA by Alpine Engineered Products and Lynx are authorised TrusSteel™ fabricators in the UK.

We are delighted to announce that Lynx TFS are now manufacturers of the latest addition to the Open Web floor beam market, the Alpine FloorTrus System.

With a newly installed, specially designed WebPro saw to complement our Birch Floor Beam press, beams of 11m plus in length can be manufactured.

The Lynx ITW FloorTruss has some key advantages over other floor beam systems:

SPEED OF INSTALLATION. Manufactured to specific spans in long lengths with wide flanges at u to 600mm spacing means fast installation and the open web design means much improved speed to follow on trades.

PREMIUM ROBUST FLOOR. Improved dynamic load capacity and lower sound transmission. All timber open web construction makes FloorTrus joists stiff under load, robust in transport and less prone to damage on site.

FLEXIBILITY. Available with trimmable ends to allow bearing tolerance. FloorTrus can be dsigned to any depth to suit job requirements.

BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. No glues used in manufacture. Off-cuts from roof trusses can be used for webs. No wastage as with solid or I-Joists. Less steel than open web designs using metal struts. All timber design ensures no cold bridging when incorporating FloorTrus in roof or wall designs. Much lower carbon footprint than concrete beam floors.

ENGINEERED. FloorTrus is manufactured off-site ensuring consistent quality and reliability. The design software allows FloorTrus to be designed to meet an infinite number of specifications.

Engineered Timber Products Manager Richard Pashley said, “The Alpine Floor-Trus system complements our I-Beam and MetalWeb range and further enables us to provide customers with the correct floor joist solution for each job. The ability to design the joists to almost any depth gives FloorTrus an advantage over other systems. I’m convinced that FloorTrus will prove very popular with our customers in the future.”

For more information on the Alpine Floor-Trus system or any of our range of Engineered Floor solutions, please contact Richard Pashley or email sales@timberframe.co.uk.
